Hello, my name is Niels Masdorp and I am a 30 year old software developer living in The Hague. I currently work at Splendo as an Android Developer making mobile applications. I have a passion for Android and spend my free time making apps (more info in the projects section).

Skills

I have 8 years of Java/Android/Backend experience and have worked on AngularJS projects as well. I have used Kotlin comfortably for a 5+ years now and really love it. This portfolio website is built with NodeJS, Jade and Stylus. When developing for Android I am comfortable with the latest developments such as Kotlin, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Dagger Hilt/Koin, Retrofit and RxJava2/Coroutines. I have also occasionally used Python and C++.

Education

I went to elementary school De Regenboog in Amsterdam. I attented my high school, Vechtstede College, in Weesp. I graduated high school in 2008 and started working. Fast forward a couple years I started studying Software Development at the University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam. I graduated as a software developer in 2016.

Work

I started my first job (paper route) when I was 12. After that, I worked at a supermarket for a couple of years prior to getting a job as a dishwasher in a small diner. I quickly worked my way up to cook and did this for about three years. I quit my job searching for something new and ended back in the supermarket as shop assistant. In my second year of studying software engineering I landed my first part-time developer job at Trifork Amsterdam.

Favorite quote

“For a long time it puzzled me how something so expensive, so leading edge, could be so useless. And then it occurred to me that a computer is a stupid machine with the ability to do incredibly smart things, while computer programmers are smart people with the ability to do incredibly stupid things. They are, in short, a perfect match.” - Bill Bryson
